This folder is the the second stage of the research into the Commission Numbers and Alphabet of Standard Cars for the period 1903 to 1915. Stage one, can be said to be in the Book by Brian Long The Illustrated History of Standard Cars 1993 This stage of the research is with assistance from Len Barr Roger Morris and Mr Robert Morrow, whom passed away Dec 1997.

With Robert Morrows VVCC paper work on SMC-1, which shows the commission numbers 1 to 1200, and years. Having a printout of Len Barrs Standard Register Listing, and John Davy letter via Len Barr, dated 21 Nov 1963 = 20/JRD/MMS, and in John Davy`s SCR, which quoates listings from contemporary journals. Then researching through contemporary journals   The Autocar to find our Standards.      In Autocar Feb 4 1905 page 150 S.M.C.listed its 6 cars bore stroke in inches, by Nov 1905 the system went to metric. ...........Allowing room for some with a formula of

Having a working knowledge of John Davy`s Green Book of 1903/1963, of which I find a few short commings! I feel that the Alphabet system started, January.1907. With the low volume of 10hp and 50hp cars, the 15hp car is most deemed to be the first of volume car to be alphabeted .

Step 1=Confirming the cars from the Brian Longs Green Book
Step 2
= The categorize of the 1-69 period. {This area needs more work}
Step 3
= The fitting of the alphabet to the cars from 1906 to 1915 model.S.
Step 4
= Allotting Commission Numbers to the alphabeted cars.=Annex A Page.
Completing 1,2, one can by elimination, find all Much Park St  Bishopgate Green Cars . Pre WW1 there were 2 Motor listings per year. A quoatation from The Autocar Oct 12 1907 Page 546. NEXT YEAR, which from a motor car point of view, can be taken as dating from Nov 11, that is the OPENING of Olympia. It would safe to assume that the model could be dated as of that year of its production run. Of the pre Friswell manufactured vehicles,=Pre Nov 1906, we can be 90% sure that the cars were all ready being sold, by up to 3 months.
THE flamboyant Friswell drove a 40hp Peugeot in the Sept 1906 Scottish Reliability Trial, whilst broken down, for sure was covered in dust when E.E.Leverett in a 24/30hp Standard drove past.     Friswell visited the Standard Motor Show Stand, Nov 1906 not 1905, page 15 in John Davy`s book.    The Auto car Listing for Mar Nov 1906 shews.!. 10hp,15hp,20hp, 2x30hp`s, a 50hp. In Autocar Dec 22 1906 Page 934 we see Friswell acquired Progress Motors, for the Standard Motor Company, the new works for 1907, { one wonders is that Widdrington.Rd he was joining the Board of Standard Motor Company. SMC.advert of Nov 24 1906 page 773 shews  SMC Much Park St Coventry, or at 106 Albany St Regents Park.    Friswell`s first Standard advert in The Autocar Dec 4th 1906 Page 4. And would have acquire sole Standard car dealership, Dec 1906. Friswell`s money came from a public company floated on the Stock exchange,The Times July 19 1906 page 13, The Autocar July 21 1906, with Peugeot cars as main stay stock. He then sold the company to the share holders and brought back in as their largest share holder. The Times Aug 21 1906 page 10.
We now come to SMC-1, The Autocar Mar 30th 1907 page 440 , for less than L500, we find a 89mm x 89mm 29*4hp, it seems that all other 20hp`s had the 108mm stroke ie The Autocar Nov 10 1906 page 715, for Less than L800. Robert Morrow, told me they had measured the Bore Stroke for rebuild, so it is 89mm X 89mm, the 102mm X 108mm would be the earlier 24/30hp. The 1906 16/20 24/30 Booklet give no mention of Friswell. It would interesting to know what cars are in the 1907 Booklet that went to the UK with the car &  by whom..   If SMC-1 is not mentioned in that Booklet, that would make the car later than May 1907. For sure certain odds ends put SMC-1 well into 1907. I intend to do a program on SMC-1 at a later date. Facts figures are researched from the Cars For The Year; listed prior to the UK Motor Show, and 2; Standard M/Company Owners Guide books 1..1911, 2..1913, have been used to confirm the alphabetical list. A Book by Friswell Company  A Dream-A Reality Shows us 2 cars the 89mm X 89mm 20hp and 102mm X 127mm 40hp. Autocar listing Nov 9th 1907 page 715 details are the same. The Daily Mail Opinions 2 months apart will help date ;A Dream.
Known  !! should be !! commission numbers have been used in Step 4, which is complicated by long wheel base version`s. A search of which factory, built which cars may help understand the allocation of all the commission numbers. A 1996 broad sheet printout of facts; figures from Roger Morris adds further to the equation . 2 pages of Duncan 2 Phizackerley of Sydney shipping list via Duncan Hudson of Adelaide assisted in the confimation of Engine Commission numbers, to have it arrive at this point in research is a blessing. Model S were manufactured to Nov 1915, Autocar June 28 1919 Page 1028. My line of thought, on the track variations of 4-08 4-09, that there is a 75% chance that they are 4-08*5,= Standard Rail Gauge. The layout of ;Green Book Alphabet pages may seem clutted, but one must show the maximun to see the minimum. For Annex B the body measurements can be deleted. Not withstanding I have an air of certainty, that all is not complete as to May 1998 ! If there are any more publications in the period 1903-1914, one could research further. Refer to Annex A for theory on Commission Numbers.Further input is invited...

1907 Book =F.A Dream 20hp 40hp By Friswell Coy   B & C models

**************************************************************************
To listed HP RAC or SMC. look to the Total CC. One will find it difficult to fathom it all when, for the change in gear box length, we have a 20 then 30hp model. One must be sceptical of the 1-69 numbers, did the UK VVCC work from little records they had, the volume seemed to be too few, there should be more numbers to the start of the 500/Alphabet. There is a major change in track from 4-06 to 4-08 for 1910 on. I have reason to believe they retained their model letter in the process.
The area of 600- 1200, would the H ? 1000 go for 200 cars ? There seems to be a gap 1201- 1999 ? The 14hp, would it be the lower measurement of RPM/HP of the 16hp ? As of May 1998, for want of further info, Gary Blucher Sth Aust has 3x15hp Engines, and by Dec 1998 should have measured the BS, so in Annex B we will see the result. It seems that volumes of models finished midnumber ie 4cyl K =2555, ? known 6cyl M 2579, then, would M run into the 2600 numbers ? A listed 20hp 6cyl L ? at 2487 2665. The Booklet for 1913/14 has O=20hp S=9*5hp X=15*6hp.. Autocar Nov 2 1912 page 797.
From Len Barr`s list, there is a 20hp.O..Model at 2819. Then the Q model in the 3000 numbers, the 15*6hp..X model should be 3100-? I have a page of Victorian Engine 3,000  4,000 Numbers that are hard to confirm between Police engine number or SMC engine number. As much as model letters are added, be cautioned, they are by elimination. Further research is needed in The Motor magazine. For every portion of research, one has to expect a percentage of error. For this period of "Phase Two" it could be as high as 15%. Page 108 has been taken as a working guide only.
There is still more info to collect around the traps to add to Phase Two for Annex B
Further input is invited.
